Taxi Advertising Artwork & Creative Guide

Taxi advertising does not use one simple rectangular artwork size. A cab is an irregular object with door splits, handles, indicators and curved panels, so the artwork is built onto a production template that already carries all of that geometry.

You will receive the correct template for your format and cab type — or you can download it below. Open it in professional design software such as Adobe Illustrator, build your creative directly onto it, and send the finished file back to us. We proof it before anything is printed.

You do not need to measure a vehicle or calculate panel sizes. That is what the template is for.

The process

From template to fitted vehicle.

Five steps, and the only one that needs a designer is the middle one.

  1. Choose your format and cab type

Supersides or a Full Wrap, on the Premium or Classic Black Cab. The template you need depends on both, because the two vehicles are different shapes.

  2. Download the correct artwork template

Every template is below, or ask us and we will send the right one. You do not need to measure anything — the template already carries the vehicle geometry.

  3. Add your creative to the template

Open the template in professional design software such as Adobe Illustrator and build the artwork directly onto it, on the client artwork layer where one is supplied.

  4. Send us the completed artwork

Supply the finished file as a PDF, following the specification on the template you used.

  1. We proof it before print and installation

Nothing goes to print without a proof. We check the artwork against the production panels and come back to you before anything is printed or fitted.

Six templates, one for each format on each cab type. These are the actual production files — build your artwork onto them rather than recreating the shapes.

Planning a Taxi Campaign?
Exterior requirements

Three rules to design around.

These are operational requirements for advertising on licensed London taxis rather than creative preferences. Design to them from the start — they are expensive to discover at proofing.

The same creative on both sides

Exterior advertising must carry the same creative on both sides of the taxi. The design can be flipped or mirrored so it reads correctly on the opposite flank, but the two sides cannot run different messages. Plan one execution rather than a pair.

No QR codes on the exterior

QR codes are not permitted on the exterior of London taxis. If a campaign needs a scannable route to a website or a purchase, that belongs on the interior tip seat panels — where a seated passenger can actually use it — rather than on the outside of the vehicle.

Restricted areas stay a plain base colour

The Full Wrap templates mark areas, including around the boot and grille, that must remain a plain base colour rather than carrying artwork. The template shows exactly where; follow it rather than working from a written measurement.

Creative practice

What works on a moving vehicle.

Recommendations rather than rules — but they are the difference between a campaign that reads at a glance and one that does not.

Keep the primary message simple

One idea per campaign. A vehicle in traffic is read in a couple of seconds, and a panel carrying three messages communicates none of them.

Design for street level and for motion

Your audience meets the artwork from the pavement, at an angle, while it moves. That is a very different viewing condition from a screen or a page, and it rewards scale and contrast over detail.

Prioritise brand recognition

If someone takes one thing from a two-second glance, it should be who you are. A logo that survives being seen small, briefly and in poor light is worth more than a clever line nobody finishes reading.

Keep important copy clear of joins and cut-outs

Door splits, handles, petrol caps and indicators all interrupt the printed surface. The template marks them — keep type and faces away from them rather than discovering the problem at proofing.

Use the shape of the vehicle

The best wraps acknowledge the bonnet, the door line and the rear rather than treating a cab as a flat surface. A poster enlarged to fit a vehicle always looks like a poster enlarged to fit a vehicle.

Check it from a distance

Print the artwork small, put it across the room and see what survives. Whatever is still legible is what your campaign actually communicates.
